DAY 1 MONDAY, JULY 5, 2010: Transfer to the airport to begin an epic journey to this world famous Passion Play and our visits to Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Our journey begins with our overnight trans-Atlantic flight to Munich, Germany.
DAY 2 TUESDAY, JULY 6 MUNICH, GERMANY: Upon our arrival at the Munich Airport, we meet our driver and board our deluxe touring coach. We will travel a short distance into the heart of the city, where we will learn about the city highlights on a short tour including including the Olympic grounds, the Glockenspiel, the grounds of Nymphenbug Castle, and the pedestrian zone. We will then have some free time before attending a folklore show and enjoying a buffet dinner at the world famous Hofbräuhaus.
DAY 3 WEDNESDAY, JULY 7 KREMSMÜNSTER, AUSTRIA: This morning our first stop will be at Mauthausen Memorial, a short drive away. This former concentration camp has been maintained as a reminder to all future generations of what did happened during one of humanity's darkest hours, and what must never happen again. After touring the memorial, we will drive another short distance to St Florian, another quaint town build around the St Florian Monastery. We will tour this beautiful monastery, and have time to enjoy lunch in one of the many restaurants nearby. We will then continue on to the quaint town of Kremsmünster, Austria to spend the night at a charming family-owned and operated 800 year-old hotel. Beautifully appointed guest rooms provide a restful stay, but the highlight of this hotel is the gourmet chef who will treat you to his renown Austrian specialties. You won’t be disappointed!
DAY 4 THURSDAY, JULY 8 SALZBURG, AUSTRIA: We continue our journey today, departing Kremsmünster and traveling toward Salzburg. Our first stop en route will be in Marktl, the birthplace of the Pope Benedict XVI. Here we will tour the town museum, and see the baptismal font used for the Pope's baptism. We will also see the home where he was born. We then continue on to Altötting, Germany's Lourdes, with the Chapel's 13th century statue of the Blessed Virgin credited with numerous miracles. Altötting has been a place of pilgrimage in Germany for over 500 years, and a place where the Pope and his family made pilgrimages on many occasions. We will visit the Silent Night Chapel, where the famous Christmas hymn was composed, and see the Black Madonna in the chapel on the main square. After time for lunch, we will continue on to the small town of Hallein, where we will go on a most fun, educational and memorable adventure. Hallein was a site for salt mining in days past, and we will don our mining garb and slide deep into the earth to learn about this important medieval industry which made this area prosper. After our tour we will continue on to our charming city center hotel in Salzburg for the next two nights.
DAY 5 FRIDAY, JULY 9 SALZBURG: This morning a local guide will introduce us to Salzburg. We will see the beautiful Mirabel Gardens and perhaps sing a note or two on the “Do Re Mi” steps that were the setting for that famous musical piece in “The Sound of Music.” We will also stroll the famous Getreidegasse, see the home where Mozart was born, and many more historic and beautiful sights. We will have the afternoon free in Salzburg. You’ll love the quaintness, variety of sights to see, and shops to browse in. This evening we will have a special dinner at Salzburg's Peterskeller. Selections of Mozart's works will be performed in the elegant Baroque dining room. The Mozart Dinner Concert is unique in Salzburg and all over the world. Enjoy the most popular compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by candlelight in a stylish ambiance. Music is performed by Salzburg Artists in historic costumes and a three-course gourmet dinner is served, prepared as it was in the time of Mozart. The musical program is performed between the courses.
DAY 6 SATURDAY, JULY 10 OBERAMMERGAU, GERMANY: Today we travel into the beautiful foothills of the Bavarian Alps, where the town of Oberammergau is nestled on the Ammer River. En route we will spend some free time in the Old Town area of Innsbruck. We will see the “Golden Roof” and the “Wedding Cake House”, and have some free time for lunch. We then continue on to Linderhof Palace, the favorite palatial residence of Kind Ludwig II of Bavaria, for a guided tour. We will also stop to see a beautiful Benedictine abbey in Ettal. During WW II, the Protestant theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and the Jesuit Priest, Rupert Mayer, both active in the resistance against the Nazi regime and later martyred, were given refuge here.
DAY 7 SUNDAY, JULY 11 OBERAMMERGAU, GERMANY: We enjoy a relaxed morning in Oberammergau, admiring the bright frescoes that adorn many of the homes and businesses, or perhaps shopping for a souvenir woodcarving for which the village is famous. This afternoon we attend Part One of the Passion Play, the legacy of a vow made by the Oberammergauers in 1632 to enact the Passion story. Due to the ravages of the Thirty Years War, the plague had taken its toll in lives. But many of the people were spared, and the following year, 1633, the first Passion Play was performed on a stage set up in the cemetery. After dinner we attend Part Two.
DAY 8 MONDAY, JULY 12 LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND: We will leave Oberammergau with lasting memories. Soon we enter Switzerland, and view the incredible sights of the Swiss Alps and some of the most spectacular countryside in the world. We make a stop in Liechtenstein, the postage stamp sized country. We continue on to Einsiedeln in the foothills of the Alps. Einsiedeln is another pilgrimage site. We then drive a short distance to our hotel in Lucerne, one of Switzerland's and Europe’s most sheik destinations.
DAY 9 SUNDAY, JULY 13 LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND: After breakfast we will make our first stop at the Rhine Falls, the largest waterfall in Europe. This impressive waterfall marks the beginning of the navigable portion of the Rhine River. We will travel by boat to get up close and personal with the falls, and take some spectacular photos. We then return to Lucerne on the magnificent Vierwaldstättersee. We take time to cross the famous wooden Chapel Bridge, and stop to see the poignant Lion Monument, designed by the Danish sculptor Thorwaldsen, as a memorial to Swiss mercenaries that lost their lives defending the King of France. We enjoy some free time in Lucerne before our dinner with some Swiss folklore entertainment.
DAY 10 SUNDAY, JULY 14 LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND: Our journey comes to an end today, as we travel to the Zurich Airport for our return flight home with unforgettable memories of this European visit and the treasures of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. |
