Sturgeon Bay, WI – We depart from our designated pickup location in Des Moines and begin our journey to Mackinac Island, with comfort stops and lunch on our own along the way. We will stop in Fond du Lac, WI and enjoy the wonders of the Kristmas Kringle Shoppe where Christmas is celebrated 361 days of the year! After exploring 10,000 square feet of the sights, sounds, and scents of the holidays, we continue on to Sturgeon Bay in Door County, Wisconsin, where stunning views, pristine natural surroundings, and famous fish boils are king! After checking into our overnight accommodations, a true Door County fish boil is on the menu for our Welcome Dinner. This experience is a favorite meal of residents and tourists alike! What began as an economical way to feed large, hungry hoards of lumberjacks and fishermen has become an integral part of the Door County experience. We’ll watch locally caught fish and potatoes boil on an open fire in an outdoor community-style kitchen, and when we see the fiery spectacle known as the “boil over,” it will be just about time to eat!
Mackinaw City, MI – Following breakfast at the hotel, the morning is ours to explore the city. With four unique shopping districts, there is plenty to see and do! Many of Sturgeon Bay’s shop owners personally create or source the handcrafted items available in their stores and often have an interesting story to go along with their wares. Lunch is on our own at one of the many local restaurants, ranging from delicious comfort food in a family-owned restaurant, an enchanting meal with a waterfront view, or an ethnic experience. Following lunch we’ll continue on our way to Mackinaw City, MI where we will check-in to our hotel and explore the area for shopping and dinner on our own. A refreshing selection of shops beckons, with everything from nostalgia to collectibles to be found along the avenues of Mackinaw City. The hometown warmth of shop owners blends with the finest merchandise available in offering guests a genuine shopping treat. The shopping in Mackinaw City is equally rivaled by the culinary delights that are steeped in tradition and will leave our taste buds eager for more!
Mackinac Island, MI – We begin today with breakfast at the hotel before catching our ferry for the short ride to Mackinac Island, where the sounds of waves and horse clops reign. Once on the island we will be met by our horse-drawn carriages and begin our tour of the island – the most authentic and enjoyable way to see it! Our tour ends at the magnificent Grand Hotel where the legendary Grand Luncheon Buffet awaits. A favorite island attraction for generations, this daily feast features bountiful tables brimming with crisp garden-fresh salads, wheels of savory cheeses, succulent slow-roasted meats, seafood, and more than twenty varieties of tempting fresh-baked pastries. It’s not just a lunch, it’s an experience! This afternoon is at our leisure to explore this authentic Victorian village. Experience the hustle and bustle of Main Street, just as it was in the early 1800s, wander the peaceful lakefront perimeter, or learn about the many historical sites to be found. After dinner on our own at one of the delicious local restaurants, we’ll come together to ferry back to the mainland for a traditional lumberjack show. We can cheer on our favorite lumberjacks as they demonstrate turn-of-the-century lumberjack skills, including pole climbing, ax throwing, log rolling, chopping, and cross-cut sawing. We may also get to see some chainsaw carving! Following the show we will retire to our hotel for the remainder of the evening.
