Day 3: Thursday, February 10, 2022

Xin Chao and welcome to Ho Chi Minh City. Formerly known as Saigon, this is a city with a turbulent and colorful past. Today Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s commercial center with over eight million inhabitants and four million motorbikes. We will transfer to our hotel for a two-night stay and freshen up for dinner as a group.

(Dinner included)

Day 4: Friday, February 11, 2022

Following breakfast, we will board our coach and watch the city’s skyline fade into the distance as the road winds through rice paddies, villages, and other scenes typical of southern Vietnam. We’ll spend a couple hours walking around the rugged grounds of Cu Chi, a rural district of Ho Chi Minh City. Our local guide will regale us with stories about how the Vietnamese constructed an intricate underground network of tunnels used by the Viet Cong during the French and American Wars. We will hear incredible tales about the unusual foods they ate to survive and see the ingenious ways they defended the tunnels with bamboo traps, camouflaged pits, and more. Upon our return to our Ho Chi Minh City hotel, the remainder of the day is at your leisure.

(Breakfast included)

Day 5: Saturday, February 12, 2022

Today we will be welcomed by the captain and crew of the luxurious Emerald Harmony and set sail along the Mekong River to My Tho in the Mekong Delta. After settling into our cabins and getting acquainted with the ship’s amenities, dinner will be served and our Tour Director will review the exciting activities planned for the days ahead!

(Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included)

Day 6: Sunday, February 13, 2022

This morning we will head to the village of Dat Dua for a visit to a coconut candy and fruit workshop to watch the popular treats being made. Up next is a stop at the Tan Long Pagoda before we return to our ship.

(Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included)

Day 7: Monday, February 14, 2022

Our day begins with breakfast and a visit to the Chinese congregational house in Kien An Cung. We will then visit the home of Mr. Huynh Thuy Le, the man who inspired Marguerite Duras’ semi-autobiographical novel, L’Amant, about a poor, young French girl’s affair with a wealthy Chinese man. After a walk through the central market in town, our group will board the ship and cruise to the My An Hung village for a chance to explore.

(Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included)

Day 8: Tuesday, February 15, 2022

Take advantage of a leisurely morning to enjoy the ship’s amenities. Consider heading to the sun deck with a drink in hand or relax with friends in the lounge. This afternoon we will head to Long Khanh Island to visit a local family and learn about scarf weaving. A stop at the Hoa Hao Buddhist pagoda and a grapefruit garden will round out our day’s touring. Afterward, we’ll return to the ship where dinner and a Lion Dance performance await!

(Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included)

Day 9: Wednesday, February 16, 2022

Enjoy breakfast before our visit to a unique family-owned Lanh My A silk-producing factory. The silk product is created with dyes made from the mac nua fruit, a kind of wood tree, which originally came from Tan Chau silk village about one hundred years ago. We will learn about the long, complicated silk-making process and have a chance to touch the real Lanh My A silk. The journey continues as we board a sampan for a boat ride to Evergreen Island and walk through a local village for a glimpse into the lives of the local farming community. Once back aboard our ship, relax as we cruise across the border between Vietnam and Cambodia.

(Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included)

Day 10: Thursday, February 17, 2022

We’ll wake up this morning in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh. The city was once known as the “Pearl of Asia,” but it was almost entirely evacuated by the Khmer Rouge in 1975. Today, we will learn more about the Khmer Rouge and the darkest days of Cambodian history. A short drive will take us to the Killing Fields at Choeung Ek to walk through the fields, visit the small museum, and learn about this sad chapter in history. The tour continues with a stop at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, also known as S-21. This is a former school that was converted into the main prison and torture headquarters of the Khmer Rouge. Of the 14,000 people known to have entered, only seven survived. The rest of the day will take on a lighter note with visits to the majestic Royal Palace and Central Market in the heart of the city. The palace is the home of the king of Cambodia and the yellow Art Deco market with its 26-meter-high dome is filled with shops selling everything from jewelry and clothing to food and flowers. To cap off our day, we’ll embark on an evening tuk-tuk ride through Phnom Penh and gather on a rooftop terrace to take in the great views of the city.

(Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included)

Day 11: Friday, February 18, 2022

Up first today are stops at the Wat Kampong Tralach and the Oudong temples. Located north of Phnom Penh, Oudong was the royal capital of Cambodia up until it moved to Phnom Penh in the 1800s. Important remnants at the temple site include the burial sites of Khmer kings and religious artifacts dating back more than a hundred years. In one of the Oudong temples there was once a large Buddha statue which was damaged during skirmishes with the Khmer Rouge who held the hill as one of their last strongholds. The resident monks will bless us with a traditional Buddhist blessing before we return to our ship for a leisurely afternoon.

(Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included)

Day 12: Saturday, February 19, 2022

We say goodbye to the ship and crew in Prek’kdam and drive to Siem Reap for a three-night stay. Lunch will be enjoyed upon our arrival in Siem Reap. This vibrant city is known as the gateway to the magnificent temples of Angkor and has a lot to offer! Tonight we are in for an incredible evening of theatrics as we head to Phare, the Cambodian circus founded by Cambodian refugees to assist young people by teaching them the performing arts. Dance, theater, live music, and breathtaking circus arts will be used to tell uniquely Cambodian stories from recent history, folklore, and modern society!

(Breakfast and lunch included)

Day 13: Sunday, February 20, 2022

After breakfast this morning, we will depart for Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire. Established in the late twelfth century by King Jayavarman VII, this fortified city was home to priests, military and palace officials, and buildings for administering the kingdom. After the tour, we’ll stop at the sacred temple of Ta Prohm. The temple has mostly been left in the condition in which it was found, with trees growing out of the ruins in a unique merging of nature and architecture that has made this temple one of the most popular. We will then return to our hotel for the remainder of the day at our leisure. Several unique restaurants are conveniently located near our hotel for dinner on your own.

(Breakfast and lunch included)
