As of January 7, 2021, Canadians and visitors alike must now show a negative COVID-19 PCR test to enter the country. The test must be taken within 72 hours of departure to Canada. This new requirement is in addition to the 14-day quarantine policy that has been in place for months. Airlines will verify passengers’ test results prior to departure for Canada, and Canadian border officials will assess quarantine plans upon arrival. Those with inadequate plans will be asked to quarantine in a federal facility. The government will be increasing efforts to enforce the quarantine, and those found not to be in compliance will be subject to up to 6 months in jail and/or a 750,000 CAD fine.
